Tears and laughter alternate in this novel of a young girl's growth to womanhood in the 1830s. Sixteen-year-old orphan Martitia is taken into the home of Dr. Gardner, a North Carolina Quaker, who has five lively sons as full of merriment as himself. The boys do their best to get Martitia to laugh, but she is at first overwhelmed by their pranks. Little by little she struggles to become a true Gardner daughter. And in so doing, she grows in humor and in love.

Reviews
"This was an incredible book!!! I read it twice in two days and didn't want to do anything else!!!"

"I saw this book on display at our homeschool conference and almost cried. I read it about 40 years ago. I delighted in the story, as a girl, and oddly, the story has stayed with me all these years. I would recommend it to the moms of serious girls everywhere. "

"I just wanted to tell you how I just LOVED Kathryn Worth's book "They Loved to Laugh"!!!!!! I finished it for the first time last week, and I keep finding myself re-reading over my favorite parts! The author obviously has great talent, and her book is now my absolute favorite on my bookshelf (or, rather, under my pillow!). At first, I had doubts about the book because I'm 17, and I was thinking how it would probably be for a younger age...boy was I wrong! The book was charming, sweet, a touch of sorrow, inspiration, humor...all the main ingredients for the recipe for a wonderful story.
Thank you, thank you, Kathryn Worth, for writing such a good book! And thank you, Bethlehem Books, for publishing it for people like myself to read and enjoy, and to keep reading and enjoying for many wonderful hours to come! God bless you! "
