Elizabeth Honness

Elizabeth Honness was born in Boonton, New Jersey in 1904. She spent much of her childhood around water since her father’s job as an engineer involved him in helping to create New York City’s water supply. She attended Skidmore College, graduating in 1926, before going on to write advertising copy for a number of publishing companies. She was managing editor of American Girl magazine, a publication of Girl Scouts of America, from 1934-1942. It was during this time that she married publisher Alfred McKaughan, as well as launched her own writing career.

Miss Honness wrote 11 mystery novels that were extremely popular with girl-readers in the 1960s and 70s. Though now somewhat dated for a “modern” story, these well-crafted stories agreeably capture an era of cohesive family life and security. New generations of readers—especially girls who love a mystery—will easily be drawn into their realistic plots and characterizations. In addition to these titles, the author wrote two Bible story books for children; she also wrote poetry and enjoyed painting.

Interested in archeology, after her husband’s death, Elizabeth Honness traveled widely, and it was from these interests that her later books came to be written, including one non-fiction book, The Etruscans: An Unsolved Mystery. She died at the age of 99 in 2003.

She is author of the book Mystery of the Hidden Face.
