Sagas, heroes, poetry, folklore—each are touched on this re-presentation of In Review’s first two journals on Nordic and British contributions to children's literature. The small but rich slice of these two great topics yields articles that reflect on the stimulus provided by Norse mythology—surprisingly great in the twentieth century—and emphasizes authors who made it possible for children to share the stirring stories of both the early Anglo-Saxons and Northern peoples. The more primal tales join with later children's books in The Stacks sections, which together list over 170 titles grouped by genre and provided with age recommendations. In addition, the chronological book list for the British Isles names the rulers of England and presents titles that march through history from the dark, pre-Celtic times through to the drama of World War II.

Two of the In Review: Living Books Past and Present journals republished in one booklet in 1997.
